From Teacher to Therapist – Client story

How financial planning gave me the confidence to start over

After more than 30 years in teaching, I made a life-changing decision: I left the classroom to pursue my passion in counselling.

It wasn’t an easy choice. Teaching gave me security—a stable income, long holidays, and a guaranteed pension through the Teachers’ Pension Scheme (TPS). For many, those are reasons enough to stay. But for me, the desire to do something different had been growing for years.

Following a new path

I’d worked abroad in Japan and Kenya after qualifying, and spent over 20 years teaching in the UK. Alongside that, I trained as a qualified counsellor and started working privately on a part-time basis. Eventually, I realised I wanted to turn this into a full-time practice. I wanted to build something of my own, and to support others in a more personal, one-to-one way.

But giving up a “job for life” and a defined-benefit pension? That was daunting.

Finding financial confidence

That’s when I reached out to Gemma, my financial adviser.

With her guidance, I was able to look at my finances from a different perspective. Together, we put a plan in place—setting up a personal pension, reviewing my income needs, and creating a long-term financial strategy that gave me the confidence to make the move.

We now meet annually to review my progress and adjust as needed. Knowing there’s a plan—and a professional in my corner—has made all the difference.

A life I love

Now I run my own private counselling practice full time. I have the flexibility to work in a way that aligns with my values. I’m in control of both my time and my financial future.

And the journey hasn’t stopped there—this year, I’m beginning a PhD in a subject I’m truly passionate about. It’s something I never would have believed possible without first taking control of my finances and having the support of a trusted adviser.

The power of planning

If you’re considering a career change or stepping into self-employment, know this: good financial advice isn’t just about numbers. It’s about having the tools, support, and confidence to shape your own future.

Because when you’re in control of your finances, you’re in control of your life.
